Chess Club

March 22, 2020
I have created a slow chess tournament for James Madison Middle School's Chess Club members on Chess Kids. All of the kids have a username and their password is their lunch number.  When they log in to their Chess Kids account, there will be a red Message Alert on his/her Home screen. Remind your kids to look for these when they log in because that is how I can communicate with the group. The kids can accept the invitation to join the tournament if they are interested. It is a slow chess tournament the games could last for days.

The Roanoke City Chess Program uses the Chess Kids program and it is very secure.  We have a private chess club on the website that only consists of the Chess Club Members at JMMS.

Remind your kids that if they want to keep their chess ninja skills strong, they can log in and do workouts or puzzles.

Thanks,
Joy Taylor

Our Chess Club will be meeting Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30. Your child will need to have transportation from Chess Club promptly at 4:30. I will be sending home a Behavior Contract that parents will need to go over and sign with their children.  These have to be turned in and signed by both you and your child or your child will not be allowed to come to chess until the contract has been returned.

I have included attachments for our local Chess Tournament Schedule for 2019-2020 and a tournament entry form for our October 26th at Fallon Park Elementary School. I would love to see James Madison Middle School have a winning team again at the local tournaments!  I encourage all of the students to participate in the chess tournaments to demonstrate their chess knowledge!  After the first tournament, the remainder of the local tournaments will be moved to Fishburn Park Elementary due to construction at Fallon.

NIGHT CHESS has started!!  Night chess now meets at Breckinridge Middle School on Thursday nights. The Intermediate group meets from 6:30-7:30pm. Students will need to be dropped off and picked up in the bus loop and enter the school through the cafeteria door at the bus loop, NOT the main entrance. This program allows students to have access to more individualized chess instruction and is a great opportunity for kids wanting to work toward joining the travel chess team.  The travel chess team is by invitation only, for those students who demonstrate strong chess knowledge and regularly attend both night chess and local tournaments.

Information about the Chess Club is located on the RCPS Webpage by clicking on the Parent Tab, Resources and then Chess Club.

I look forward to seeing everyone!

Thank you,

Joy Taylor
